Despite enormous gains that have been made in Central and Eastern Europe thanks to the European Union, one glaring gap remains in the domain of minority rights, especially those of Europe’s indigenous Roma (or gypsy) community. It is essential that the European Community make a strong commitment to improving the lives of Roma in the coming decade.
