Fletcher Forum Interview with Dr. Vali Nasr

The Fletcher Forum recently sat down with Dr. Vali Nasr, a professor of International Politics at the Fletcher School and newly appointed Dean of the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. A distinguished scholar and author who served for two years as Senior Advisor to the Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan at the U.S. Department of State, Dr. Nasr reflects on his time at Fletcher and his experiences inside government with Fletcher ForumEditor-in-Chief Alex Ely.

In part one, Dr. Nasr discusses the differences between government and academia, sharing some of the challenges and rewards of advising high-level policymakers.

In part two, he discusses his time at the Fletcher School, both as a graduate student and as a professor, including his interactions with recent students. He also comments on the importance of international affairs graduate programs for educating future policymakers and leaders.

In the final portion of the interview, Dr. Nasr offers insights on recent developments in the Middle East and South Asia and their implications for US policy going forward.
